Last Night's Hearing - Agents and Citizens Galore
Last night, insurance agents and concerned citizens filled most of one section of the hearing room. Many of them testified before the House Health and Human Services Finance Committee regarding the government-run health care bill that includes the Health Insurance Exchange. Although only 20 minutes of testimony was allowed, the CCHC roster of testifiers cut their remarks short, hit the main points, and highlighted key concerns with:
- the proposed Exchange,
- the proposed three new taxes, and
- the proposed limits on access to insurance and medical care.
AUDIBLE UPROAR: At the end of the hearing--at nearly 11:00 p.m.--and after all the amendments were added, Rep. Steve Gottwalt (R-St. Cloud) said two individuals wanted to comment on the bill. The chair approved, but as soon as CCHC president, Twila Brase, and CCHC Board member John Tyler stood, there were audible complaints from the committee members, charging that they have already testified. The Chair reminded the Mr. Tyler and Ms. Brase that they had already spoken. Ms. Brase reminded the Chair that the many amendments adopted substantially changed the bill from the previous testimony, and that the Chair had never asked for testimony in opposition or support of the amendments before they were adopted. At that, the Chair permitted the two to testify...for only one minute each.
